Spent a few minutes reading through some of the past reviews. All I can say is that I don't recognize their comments in the experience we have when we come. The service can sometimes be slow - but I often get much slower service at popular chains like Red Robin and Olive Garden. We all (me, wife and three kids) have our favorite dishes that we often get (for me, it's the steak fajitas with extra peppers) and we all find it has great flavor. This is one of the few places where I find that the rice is worth eating. We also get a plate of refried beans smothered with chile verde and the beans and chips are gone in what seems like seconds... The servers are very friendly with us and recognize us when we come. It is definitely not a big chain restaurant - and that is part of why we come. Great atmosphere to sit, eat and visit.

Worst service ever! If I hadn't stopped someone I'm certain we would have sat there all night. Even after flagging someone down it took nearly 50 minutes to get 2 kids meals and 2 combination plates. The food wasn't that bad but it took so long to get it I could've learned how to make tamales and done it myself! Not to mention I did not get a single refill on my water. We will definitely not be back any time soon. To be honest I was so mad by the end of the meal that they were lucky I didn't just walk out without paying. We got curious and started looking around the restaurant and of the 12 tables we could see, only 2 of them actually had food on them. DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE!

Love this place! I learned quick that their service is more than unsatisfying but their food is great! Call in and get it to go! You'll be much more pleased! Their shredded beef tacos are amazing with a nice zing of vinaigrette! Give them a second chance :)

I can buy frozen burritos that will taste better than any dish they serve here. Unlimited chips and salsa... If you enjoy salsa you squeeze out of a bottle this place is for you. Would not recommend. Sub par service.

This review has been sitting in my "Unfinished Review" box for a long time. I wish it was better. I usually don't write negative reviews, and I always take them with a grain of salt when I read others on Yelp. Feel free to do so with mine. Probably the slowest service and blandest Mexican food I have had in a long time. The food reminded me of the insipid soft tacos meal served in my small town Southern Utah high school cafeteria. Who knows, this kind of food may appeal to a certain segment of the population. For my money, I'll go east or go north for much better Mexican fare. I know I'll feel guilty in the morning for writing a negative review about a small family business. On the bright side, sometimes, there's no accounting for taste. I was surprised to see some people, that by the sound of it, were "regulars."

Our favorite restaurant for Mexican food. The atmosphere is very comfortable and warm. Usually, soft music is audible. It is easy to carry on a conversation with friends. The complimentary chips are very soft and "light." They compliment nicely the mildly spicey salsa. The portions are very large. Everything ordered by our group was very flavorful and greatly enjoyed. The steak fajitas I ordered were the largest portion of fajitas I have ever had. There was a very good mixture of onions and peppers, and the steak was very flavorful. Three soft tortillas could not hold everything but all was consumed.

The worst Mexican food I've ever had. The iceberg lettuce on my plate had the most flavor. Yuck!!

Worst ever. Paying for complimentary chips, no hot sauce, food bland. Taco Bell beats this place in taste by far.

I went to Tio's several years ago when they first opened, and haven't been back since then. By some of the more obviously honest reviews on here, that decision wasn't a mistake. The food was mediocre at best, but even considering the lack of Mexican restaurants in the area at the time, it was worth it to go somewhere else, no matter how far. The bowl of chips were puny, and the salsa was bland. The biggest blow, though, came a few days later when I was checking my credit card statement and saw that they had overcharged me by $100 for two people. When I called, the server who waited on us answered and remembered us. He gave me the runaround while his manager coached him in the background, refusing to respond to a customer herself. Rather than look at his own records, he wanted me to bring in my credit card statement to show him. It was a lot easier to call AmEx and dispute the obviously fraudulent charge. This must be the only reason they remain opening, by scamming customers or laundering money somehow!

the chips are tasty. ordered a quesadilla. it was okay. but lacked taste. when i added some sauces myself to the dishes they tasted better. they need a better chef and people who can mix ingredients themselves to compensate for lack of taste food they serve.

Absolutely disgusting and over priced food. Found a curly hair in the chimichanga. Don't understand why people like this place. Absolute low class service and food.

The food is ok. Not special, but good. I like the guacamole, and usually get enchiladas with Colorado sauce. They don't seem to have an efficiently run system though. Servers are nice but seem inexperienced and there never seems to be someone in charge of a rush. It's seemed this way for years. It's funny they only have one computer to open and close orders, which adds to tension between employees. It just feels like management needs to take charge and get some processes in place.

Service was great. Our waitress was attentive and efficient. The Mr. had chili verde enchiladas, his favorite here--and one of his favorite places for it. I love their beef, which is shredded and high quality. Tasty in tacos and enchiladas. We also really like their rice. This is a nice place to come for Mexican that reminds me of all the places I used to go in California--family-owned, not a chain. Will continue to come here!!!

Their food is passable but they are skimpy on the chips and we waited forever it seemed to get our water refilled even though they had 4 servers there and weren't that busy. The reason I am never returning is we ordered a big plate of guacamole for $9 and the chips didn't come with it! They charged extra for the chips and the guac was half shredded lettuce. Nothing on the menu about the guac being mixed with lettuce. In actuality, it was probably about 2-3 avocados. Not much guac even though it was supposed to be the large order. I have eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants and have never been charged extra for a small bowl of chips when ordering guac. I felt I was nickled and dimed for every penny they could get out of me.

If the service was good then it would be a 4 or 5 star. Horribly slow service every time. Took 40 minutes just to get our drinks. The chimi is good and the nachos never disappoint with real Cheese that's used. Just go when you're not in a rush.

So it has been three years since my last visit. Tio's is still in business so I thought since we were at Daybreak we would give them another shot. Sigh.. Time hasn't improved them much and looking back at the reviews, it amazes me that they still are open. We arrived early on a Friday night while they weren't busy. Maybe 5 tables for two servers. We were seated immediately and brought a very small bowl of chips as the waitress took our drink orders. We finished up the chips before the waitress ever came back to take our order. She finally came with the drinks and took our order, we asked for more chips while we waited. It took quite some time for the dinners to come out, about 20 minutes. The chips never came, and our drinks sat empty. Finally when the food came, so did the chips. I find it interesting (for someone who waited tables) that our waitress was so unavailable with so few tables. The couple that sat adjacent to us sat nearly 25 minutes before anyone even took their order. The husband kept saying, "let's just go, " to his wife. The food was good. Flavorful and as represented. But the service still leaves me disappointed.

I love to support local businesses, but this place is just terrible each time we've been, which is twice now. We went back recently, hoping it has gotten better. Everything is very greasy and not good at all. Don't waste your time or money.

This was overall a good place to go. The food was delicious and plentiful. I ordered the beef tamales, there was so much I couldn't eat it all. The food tasted so good that I wanted to finish it all though. The service was pretty good, the waiters were all nice. I can't wait to go back.

Tio's other location has a fantastic reputation. This one lacked luster several years ago but at our most recent visit it was great. The service was fast, helpful, and kind. The take-out is fast. I encourage everyone to go back and give it another whirl. Chips and salsa and service are my favorite. For the price, quality of food, and location its awesome.

Not super impressed, I used to live in Murray and frequent the original Tio's and it was good, a decent cheap place for high schools kids to grab some food after sports events. But I dont feel like the Tios in daybreak has the same thing going on, I have ordered food a couple times and never been impressed. It seems microwaved.

  • Jason F.

Really truly bad food. They clearly make almost no effort to make food with taste. I have been here several times. Everything lacks flavor. The meat and poultry tastes microwaved. There is no way they can get the food so overly hot without a microwave. Boring menu. No innovation. No effort. The only reason to go here is either it is the last restaurant on Earth or you are trapped outside in a blizzard and need to find shelter.

I had such high hopes. SoDa Row in Daybreak is upscale. It feels like you're coming to a lovely neighborhood to have a lovely dinner. That's half accurate. The neighborhood is lovely. Unlike the previous reviews, we did have decent service. The atmosphere of the restaurant was attractive and warm. The chips were tasty, dusted with a light coating of Mexican seasoning. The salsa was meh. Somebody there likes white pepper. A lot. I don't. (I think it tastes like iodine). As for the food, to quote Clara Peller, "Where's the beef?" The flavor profile of the dishes was fine. But the meat portions were so skimpy. I'm pretty sure that dining at Tio's Daybreak is more about paying their exorbitant rent than it is about actually feeding the customer. I wasn't looking for supersize portions here, but I'm fairly certain our steak fajitas had maybe 3 ounces of meat, tops. Our shredded beef enchilada had the thinnest layer of shredded beef possible. Here's what we had: Combo number four - one shredded beef enchilada, one ground beef taco, one beef tamale plus rice and beans. Steak and shrimp Fajitas 2 ground beef tacos (my son) A side of rice (my two-year old) One Flan Here's the breakdown: Flavors fine. Nothing craveable, nothing bad. Red sauce, fine. Beans, fine. Fajitas, fine. A nice note on the guac - it was lemony and bright. Taco, fine. A side note - they put Italian dressing or some sort of oil and vinegar mix on the lettuce they use in their tacos. An odd surprise. I'm not saying it didn't work, it was just unexpected, and not necessarily in a good way. Flan - watery tasting and drizzled with something that tasted like Smucker's Butterscotch. My eight year-old liked it, but I'm a purist. So that's it. Tio's. Take it or leave it. I'll leave it.

To call this authentic Mexican is a joke. This is TeX/Mex at best. The service has always been so-so. The atmosphere is that of a dying restaurant, quiet and lonely. I don't think they've ever had ambient music. You are often left alone in the dining room. I've always had to wait for a hostess, though they've never seemed busy with hostessing. The food is decent, but nothing worth writing home about. Overall Tio's is another lackluster "Mexican" place in Utah.

Had the Chimichanga which was pretty good. Marisol was polite, efficient and gave good recommendations. The environment is cheap and run down.

Food was so-so. Their recommended dish is a chimichanga and it was ok, nothing memorable. Service was good. Typical Mexican restaurant atmosphere. The free chips and salsa were good though.

The horchata was sooo watered down that I returned it. The main dishes were good. I had the chimichanga which was tasty. Just your average-run of mill mexican restaurant. Better than taco bell but not as good as Red Iguana.

There's not too many good sit down Mexican restaurants on the South end of the valley. I was hoping that Tio's would be an exception, but it was probably one of the worst dining experiences I've had in recent years. Tio's is located in the new Soda Row development in Daybreak (South Jordan). The buildings and walkways in the surrounding area are really nice. Tio's dubs itself as "Fine Mexican Dining", and if you didn't walk in and try it, you would probably believe it. The inside and outside of the restaurant are nice. The service, in a word = terrible. I walked in with my kids and the hostess was on her cell phone. After waiting for her to finish up her call we were seated. We showed up around 5 pm on a Saturday night and the place was empty. They had a lot of staff moving around the place, but it seemed like nobody was attending to the customers. The brought out the complimentary chips and salsa after a few minutes. It took longer than necessary for them to come out and take our order. My son ordered "Mexican Ribs". After 5 minutes they came back and said they didn't have any ribs. No big deal, they had a decent kids menu, so he ordered chicken nuggets (he's not too adventurous). The food took a long time to come out. When it finally did arrive, they only brought out 3 of the 4 meals. The missing meal was a cheeseburger for my 3 year old daughter... Too bad it wasn't my meal, I'm much more patient. After waiting another 5 minutes, they finally brought her food out. By then we were half way done with our meal, and letting my daughter pick off our plates. I ordered the beef chimichanga, which was denoted as a house special. Frankly, I've had better chimichangas at fast food places like Bajio. After we finished up, we waited several more minutes to get our bill and pay. In summary, the food was below average, and the service was bad. I would have given this place two stars if the service was decent, but I left feeling unsatisfied from the food, and pissed about the service.

I love the fajitas!! That's my review and my tip. I've been here a few times and met Martha the owner. She is so nice and sweet. I'd try for a weekday late lunch or early dinner, because once it gets busy it can take a while to get your order.

Fair food. Extremely slow service. Must have been shorthanded. Don't plan on combining dinner with any other evening event. Too bad because as mentioned before South Jordan needs good dinning options, especially in this area

Can't say anything I have had here is bad, its mostly just average Mexican food. Service has always been fine though.

Overpriced and food was not good at all. Will never come back.

As good or better than similar Mexican restaurants around (eg. Mi Ranchito,etc.). Their service isn't great, but if you keep your expectations low and drink your one glass of water slowly it's not terrible either.

    (4)
  • Curt N.

while it's not our favorite Mexican place around, it's nice having it close to home. The food was ok, although I think I'd prefer to just make the drive to Draper for some better choices in the same price range. Lunch is nice here because it's never crowded. So the service was great while we were there.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
